Brethren is
a response to the ongoing military conflicts in the world, in particular
between Israel and Gaza. It uses the repetitive motif of a 155-millimeter
artillery shell. Unlike the lethal originals, these shells are ice. The ice is made of spice water: the spices
that are commonly used by both Arab and Jewish people in their cooking.
An ephemeral material has been chosen to symbolize a
wish that real artillery might be as benign as water; also to explore the
real-time melting process of the shells, to suggest the unruly and
unpredictable process of conflict.
